The damaged brain of NFL player Chris Henry

08-19-2010
It is clear that football is a brain-damaging sport. An autopsy of the Cincinnati Bengals’ Chris Henry showed evidence of brain damage.
Chris Henry’s brain revealed signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which has been observed in autopsies performed on many older, retired NFL players.

But Henry was only 26 years old!

Apparently, the brain damage football players experience due to repeated concussions isn’t something that only emerges when they get older. The brain damage can affect them NOW!

But there is hope. Our study on retired NFL players shows that the brain damage suffered can be rehabilitated with a brain healthy program.

I think it is critical that the NFL institute and subsidize a brain healthy program for all current and retired players to follow. It could help prevent tragedies like the senseless death of Chris Henry.
