Scotty Hunt’s TBI Survivor Story

Scotty Hunt

My name is Scott Hunt, also known as “Scotty.” In the summer of 1985, I was working at a children’s Christian camp in L.A. (Lower Alabama). Forgive me for saying that, but that is one phrase I had to use at the beginning of my story! I was very athletic, being the captain of my high school basketball team and an all-star second baseman on my college baseball team. One year I was voted pitcher of the year on my team.

Then on August 1, 1985, my life was changed forever!! I was a passenger in a car that was involved in a head-on collision. I was knocked into a coma that lasted for nine weeks. Doctors suggested to my parents that I be put into a nursing home, because they had never seen a person with brain injuries as serious as mine ever come out of his coma. And come out I did!! PTL, Praise the Lord!!

I had to learn to walk, talk, drive, and basically live again.

Since then I have gotten married, own my own home, and live a very productive life. My mother has written a book about the difficult times we have overcome. The name of the book is Why Scotty? There have been two different passages from the Bible that have ministered to me. The first one is II Corinthians 4:8-11 and it says:

8We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;
9Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;
10Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.
11For we who live are always delivered unto death for Jesus’ sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh.

The second verse I like to use comes from Hebrews 3:13 and it says something like, “But exhort one another daily, while it is called Today, lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.”

I think those first verses do a great job of describing my life and what I have been through, and that second verse describes a little bit of what I am trying to do with my life!!!!
